Android for the win

As a lean, highly customizable, and highly transparent mobile OS, Android has topped Apple’s iPhone OS, Palm’s WebOS, and certainly Microsoft’s Windows Mobile to become the top smartphone platform.

As the hottest new platform lately, Android has been getting a lot of support, both officially and otherwise. For instance, after rooting my Droid Incredible, an active user / developer base has been keeping me busy installing all kinds of new features. WiFi tethering and a VPN client are child’s play. Overclocking and “undervolting” the Qualcomm 1GHz processor have even become commonplace.

With the release of Android 2.2, Google is leading the pack in terms of support for Flash content. Even though Verizon customers may be waiting some time for an official 2.2 update to their handset (especially those of us with the HTC Sense UI add-on), rooted phones always reap the benefits long in advanced.

I’ll be posting more impressions of certain features of the Android platform, but for now, suffice it to say I’ll be a member of the Android bandwagon for quite some time.

So I’ve got OpenVPN installed and running now.

On a completely related note, today I realized that I undertake strange computer endeavors without any end use.

Riding in the passenger seat on a weekend gateway… Windows XP laptop WiFi tethered to my rooted Droid Incredible. Using PuTTY as a terminal to SSH into my danschoppe.com domain (domain name used in place of a static IP, updated using EveryDNS). All this so I could work on setting up a danschoppe.com VPN server (OpenVPN) so I can remotely push automated backups to my network storage device.

The point of this post isn’t the VPN server or tethering in the middle-of-nowhere Minnesota, but the ability to be connected (even configuring a server) anywhere and anytime I want. In fact, I’m writing this before bed on an Android market app by Wordpress.

Now I’ve got to find a new car stereo head unit that will play nicely with Android. I’d like hands free calling, syncing contacts, and sharing music over Bluetooth. If anyone has recommendations, please pass them along :-)
